LEARNING MODULE 1

In 3-4 paragraphs, please respond to the following questions by adding a “comment” to THIS post (rather than creating a new one)
First, please write 5 words to describe your general perspective of what Feminism is prior to reading this week’s assigned readings.  Then write 5 words to describe your perspective after reading this week’s readings.  Please write a brief reflection of how your views have or have not changed and why?  Can you identify the primary ideologies and institutions that have informed YOUR view of Feminism today. [Please speak honestly, there is no “right” or “wrong” answer]

Second, After having read the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions given at the Seneca Falls Women’s Rights Convention of 1848, and the two documents written by the National Organization for Women in the 1960s, do you think that there are any similar grievances that are still unresolved in U.S. society today?  What are they?  In other words, what are the limits on women’s rights that still need to be addressed and which resolutions have not been fully fulfilled.  In your opinion, which of these is most urgent?  Please draw from these documents directly in your answer.
Finally, what perspective does Sojourner Truth offer to both movements?  How is her perspective different than the Seneca Falls document and why? How do you think her speech might have helped women’s rights activists?  How might it have hindered them?  Why is this important?

  1. * Freedom, equality, historic, powerful, shaping.
    * Empowering, meaningful, important, anti-discrimination, defining.

    * My feelings about Feminism have not changed after the readings. I feel that Feminism is a crucial part of our past, and the readings did not change that for me. I have always believed that girls could do anything that boys could do, and I was devastated when my little brother pointed out that I could not write my name on the fence while I was peeing. :) Despite this, I know that women and men should be treated as equals in society.

*I believe there are a few things addressed in the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions and the N.O.W.'s Bill of Rights that could still use improvement today. For example, many wedding vows still say "promise to obey" as talked about in the declaration. I think that this should be permanently removed. When pledging your vows to someone, it shouldn't sound like they are purchasing you. The declaration also mentions that women should no longer sit back and allow themselves to be treated differently. Even today, women allow treatment towards them that should not go on.l Women need to stand up and embrace that men are not superior to women.

*Sojourner Truth offers the view of an African American woman in the suffrage movement. Her perspective is much different that that of the Seneca Falls and N.O.W. because not only is she a woman, she is a black woman. I think her speech helped remind white women that they should not be fighting against each other, but working together for gender equality. Her speech was very important because she brought a new light for black women in the suffrage movement.

*While feminism is looked over by many males, I by far see feminism as a way for females to express themselves whether the issue has to do with equality or liberty. Although I think that some women jump to conclusion and sometimes forget that they have higher expectations than men. I don't know about you, but I for one think that having such a high bar sets the standard for women, most importantly keeps us men in check
    SN:i love women :)

*Yes, there are many subjects unaddressed in the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions. The Bill of Rights as of now has touched many issues and has cleared many problems women have. Although it is there in writing, these problems still go on. If anything feminist should try harder to enforce these Bill of Right's. Too many women have worked their ass off!
    SN: excuse my language :)

*One of the main problems in the feminist movement was the self inflicting wounds. Sojourner Truth helped many women to realize that they were shooting themselves in the foot. Sojourner knew that if all women would come together their voice would be strong and heard.

*Feminism has always been one imperative aspect of our lives that has been overlooked, and after reading this my views still have not changed. A lot of people tend to frown upon it without actually knowing the real meanings and objectives of feminists. I see feminism as an outlet for women to express themselves. In our society there is a double standard for men and women. Men can do things women cant, and women have a less advantage at most things than men do. But its important for us women as a whole to go above and beyond in whatever we do so that we can prove society wrong.
*Yes, there are quite a few issues in the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions, that can be adjusted. Some of it appeared some-what prejudice to me, favoring the men. I think there should be more of a woman's voice included in this document, for equality purposes.
*Sojourner Truth was a female activist for suffrage and also a constant reminder as to why no matter what color you are, we all need to come together as one and fight for our rights. If men can do it, we can as well :) her conrtributations will never be forgotten.

My opinion of feminism did not change after the readings. I think it is something that empowers women and helps us express that we can things men can and can't do. I think just like any issue sometimes feminism can bet taken a little too far, but it is important for women to be able to express that we are just as equal and can contribute just as much to society as men can.

In the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions, I feel that many issues were left out and some of it was a bit prejudice toward males. I agree with Lauren, there should have been more of womens opinion in the document.

Sojourner Truth was a brave, intelligent women who stood for what she believed in and voiced her opinion for all the women who couldn't.She believed women needed just as much equality as men.She was a great contributor to women's rights and also the African American community.

My opinion of feminism has not changed since reading these excerpts. The Feminist movement provided an outlet for women's voices to be heard in a public arena. Women continue to struggle for equality in areas such as employment, income, & social issues. I was lucky enough to grow up in a family with very strong female characters- my mom, my grandmother, & my aunt have all taught me to stand up for myself & speak my mind. Although perceptions of feminism differ, there is definitely a need for feminism in modern society.

Unfortunately, the Declaration of Sentiments & Resolutions is very biased & does not accurately express women's needs. Like Samantha, I do not like the idea of promising to "obey" your husband in wedding vows- the idea of marriage is to form a partnership, not for men to gain ownership of women.

The views expressed by Sojourner Truth were very important to the feminist movement- she brought a new perspective as an African American woman. Furthermore, she helped women see that by coming together as a united front, regardless of color, they would create a stronger force.

My views of feminism didn’t really change after the readings. I think feminism is the belief of women attaining equal rights as me in all areas of society. Since the beginning of time gender roles have been forced upon us encouraging our upbringing, consciousness, and a large majority of popular culture. I haven’t ever described myself as a feminist, but I have always firmly believed that females can do anything that a male can.

Yes, many topics in the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions that should be revamped. It comes across as being prejudice towards males. In my opinion, a woman’s voice should have been taken in account more. Women should not have to “obey” their husband and not demand the same from them.

Sojourner Truth is a feminist icon in my opinion. She spoke the absolute truth when she chastised white feminists for overlooking the plight of black women. Women, no matter what race or color, should come together as one to be heard.

My feelings have not changed at all after reading the assigned readings for this week. Yes, I do agree that still today to some degree women are denied some of the same equal opportunities as men. At the same time not only are women being denied but other groups such as minorities, mentally disabled, elders, and convicts as well. We live in a society of tradition and no drastic changes in history have occured over night. Women's rights will be a thing of the future along with other groups pressing for equal rights.

I believe there are some similar grievances that are still unrosolved in society today. An example are the double standards in men and women. Women have always been taught be behave at our best in social functions and if we do not conform to these standards, we are frowned upon, where as a man is thought of as being a man. We aren't as delicate as everyone presumes us to be.

Soujourner Truth offers the perspective of a black women. Souyourner Truth's perspective is different from that of the Senecca Falls document because her speech was somewhat of a call to action, and that black women were facing some of the same struggles. Women should sick together regardless of race because they were all in the same boat. Not only were they women but they were black women who suffered discrimination also.

  8. @ Sarah Bynon these readings also made me want to speak up for myself too. Some of the things they were saying still applied even today. Sure we are thought of as equals now...but are we really eaqual?

  9. @RavenP: I agree with you. I dont see myself as a feminist either, but I do stand for equality rights amongst females & I believe that anything men can do, women can do as well.
@Tariah Hunt: I love how you pointed out that minorities struggle with equality as well ! Anyone who is not viewed as being "normal" has a struggle in today's society.

After the readings my view on feminism has not changed. Women wanted and still want the same rights and respect as men have. A feminist to me means women fighting for equal opportunities in their society. In my opinion men may be better at doing things but women should still have the opportunity and chance to be able to do them. I am glad to have rights and have freedom but I would not categorize myself as a feminist.

There are some issues in the Declaration of Sediments and Resolutions. I think Lauren is right when she says there should be more of a women’s voice included. I also feel the same as Lamonn about how issues are in writing but the problems still go on. I appreciate the women that stood up in the past and gave us the same opportunities men have today.

Sojourner Truth helped not only the women’s rights but African American women’s rights. Her speech helped the women’s rights activists because it was not just white women wanting the same rights and freedom as men, it was also black women, which added many more women to the fight for equality. It may have hindered the activists because there were still issues between white people and African Americans back then. However her speech was important because it brought more hope into changing the views on women, no matter the color.

    * My view of feminism didn't change after reading the assigned articles. I still believe feminism is the coming together of women in the fight for equal rights and better opportunities in the world . Feminism in my eyes not only played a major role in history but in life today because without we wouldn't have the rights we do now or being looking towards a brighter future. In the end feminism is the courage of strong women pushing the fact that women are equal and just as capable as men.

*There are a few issues in the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolution that should be addressed and improved in today's society. One issue i think that needs improvements is no weeding vows should use the phrase "promise to obey" marriage is about partnership and love, not being some kind of "pet" for your husband. Another issue think that should be addressed is that women are equal in every life aspect as men and that the only difference is physical strength to body makeup. The women who first pushed the matter of feminism have accomplished so much for the women of today to take any male crap or not push for a better future.

*Sojourner Truth became a symbol of why women should come together no matter the race or class. Sojourner knew that the actions and voices of multiple women would have a more powerful, enforcing impact than the work or one. She was a wise, power, strong feminism activist for suffrage. Sojourner also help women find the heart to push on through the self inflicting pain for better rights and to never give in.

After reading the stories about feminism, my beliefs and views on feminism only seemed to become stronger. I never really knew how limited women were. I view feminism as a powerful and inspirational way of women coming together to support each other so they can stand up for what they believe in. I would not consider my self as a feminist because I am not so sure I would have the courage to stand up and do what those women did.

I think that the NOW Bill of Rights states loud and clear that women are equal to men and can do just about everything that men can do. Because of the opportunities women have been given, so much has changed such as women being in higher executive positions, becoming doctors, lawyers etc. I know there are probably some issues that could be improved, but I do think that women have made a big impact in becoming equal to men.

Sojourner Truth made such an impact on women's rights only on because she was a woman but an african american woman. She kept saying "Ain't I a Woman?" When I read this I could feel her frustration about being treated equal and even being treated equal to white women too. I bet her speech helped other women activists because Truth was probably able to make them realize that women should all be coming together to tackle these issues together and not against each other.

My view on feminism did not change after the readings. Feminism is an important part of our Nation's history and it proves how tough women really are. God created all people equal, but their views and opinions different. I feel like men overlook women because they entitle themselves as more powerful, which isn't always true. I don't see myself as a feminist but I do understand that we are all the same.

A woman's right and voice should not be looked down upon. Stereotypes show that women are for cooking and cleaning and a man's duty is the handywork and being the breadwinner. Easily, women can do the man's 'job', and the men can do the women's 'job'.

Sojourner Truth's "Ain't I a Woman" shows the perspective of not only a active feminist but of an active African American feminist idol. Her speech is significant because it shows that all women, black or white, need to come together as one and fight for feminism.

Honestly, my views did not really change about Feminism after the reading; however, I feel my views, about women being treated equally in a world that’s portrayed to be male dominated, has been enlightened by the readings. A woman can stand to many levels of responsibility, and take on many roles in society, as was proven during World War II.
In the U.S. today, professional male athletes’ yearly salaries are outrageous due to a high fan base and other effects. In my opinion, professional female athletes are putting forward the same amount of efforts and abilities as male. Why is there such a grand difference in salary? If it’s due to fans base, I think the U.S should host both professional male and female athletic events consecutive in the same location. By doing this, the fans will be forced to pay to see both events.
Not only is Sojourner Truth a woman, but she is a woman of color. This is what made perspective so different from the Seneca Falls Document. She offers the opinion of a black woman in the suffrage movement. I think her speech, strength and experience may have helped women's rights activists feel encouraged to fight harder. I also think her speech should have given them pride in what they were doing. Sojourner Truth participating in the movement was very important because it showed that the movement was for equality of all women.

  15. @Lauren R.- Your last paragraph (Sojourner Truth) was great. I agree with 100% you said it all perfectly.
@EmilyTurney - I like that you stated the positions that both women and men are cut out to do. A woman can do just as much, if not more, than a man can and you simply stated that.

  16. @Taylor.Ann I agree with you about your view about feminism because we are really lucky to have been given equal opportunities. Not only that but women deserve it too. Men and women are equal for sure!

@AnnetteFarrell I agree with your paragraph about Sojourner Truth. I think it was an important stepping stone for women every where that coming together to fight for women's rights would be a lot easier if we did it together and not against each other.

My opinion of feminism did not change at all after reading the readings. I believe that feminism is the fight for equality in a society where sometimes women are looked at as weak and insuperior. Feminism to me reflects how strong women really are. The integrity of the women in the readings only proves that women are not insuperior to men.

I feel that there are still grievances in today's society. I totally agree with Tariah that there are double standards in men and women. All of the "rules" society places on women to follow to be considered "lady-like". Where as a man is just being a man.

Sojourner Truth offers that the fight for women's rights should not only be for white women but for black women as well. The the fight should not differ between color because they're all women fighting the same fight for equality. I believe her speech offered an enlightend view to women's rights activist by showing them that all women, black and white, should be united as one for the fight for equality in society.

*My view on feminism still stands as it did before the reading. I feel as if men overlook the womens right because they feel as if they should have the power. In my eyes, judging by the way things are today, a man will always feel as if he has more power than a woman. "Why he feels that way?" is a question that will forever be asked.

*Yes, I think alot of womens voices are not heard and alot of our opinions and issues are not addressed. Stereotypes are a huge part of why most of these things have not been brought to attention. Most men think that a womens place is to be a housewife, which is staying at home, cooking, and cleaning.

*Sojourner Truth's was not only a feminist, she was an African American Feminist and her speech was very powerful and inspirational. She says that all women should come together not only black but all race.

After reading my view on feminism has not really changed. All women deserve the right to live their life just like every other person. My view on feminism today is that there really is not very much of it anymore. I feel that women have fought for their right and now are treated with the up most respect in every aspect of life.

There are many problems that are not specifically addressed in the Declaration of Sediments and Resolutions. But I also believe that now a days most things that women used to fight for have succeeded and women are just as powerful as men. Sure I do not know if we will be seeing a women president anytime soon, but the times they are a changing.

Soujourner Truth is almost a very different type of women. She does not only fight for womens rights but she first for the rights of African American Women which is almost a whole different ballpark. Her speech was the most empowering and contreversial and actually made a difference.

-My view of feminsim changed slightly after the readings. When I thought of feminsim I thought of a time in history when women stuck up for their rights. I figured out that there was more to feminism than just sticking up for women's rights its also about a bond and determination that a group of strong women share to strive for equality.
-Many women have been given the chance to become many things such as doctors and many other jobs because of the NOW bill of rights. Even though many things have improved I feel as if there is much improvement still needed in some of thes jobs in society such as politics. Women are still talked down upon and not treated quite as fair as men. Many people still believe women can't do as much as men in the workforce.
-Sojourner Truth brought in a whole new voice on the the movements because she was woman who was African American. She helped many woman realize that by fighting against one another they couldn't accomplish as much as if they were all together. She was such an inspiration to all women activist, white or black.

*My opinion didn't change after the reading. I have always felt that women's rights should always be a subject to talk about and look over. I feel that women are not given enough credit for what they are capable of. The fight for equality among women will forever be a conflict of some sort. Whether or not it progresses is something we will have to wait and see, or change for ourselves. It is a war that may never be resolved, but is always getting better.

*Yes, there are many things that should be changed in The Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions. In general, it is easy to tell the point of view in which this document was written. Although it has certain things that may benefit women, it is still heavier towards the male side of things. Although this is true, it has come a long way in the resolution of women's rights where they are now, for the most part, equal in most areas to men.

*Sojourner Truth's speech was not only moving, but powerful in the sense that no one could argue with what she was saying without being completely ignorant to the truth. She not only was fighting for women, but for herself as an African American Woman in this stage of time. She said that if women were supposed to be treated a certain way, than why wasn't she treated the same way. I think it took a spin on things and aloud people to think a little deeper into equality as a whole. And I do agree with her when she talks about doing the same things as a man, mostly the eating part ;)

    1) Before reading, I was very ignorant about Feminism and feminist and how important it is, espically for women to pay closer attention to the matter. We seem now to take for granted what women had to overcome for our rights we have today. My views have changed about the subject, and I feel a lot more strongly about how we still are dominated by males. In this country, I feel as if woman have just as much responsible as men do, if not more. For example, Condoleezza Rice is an exceptional woman in the country that shows how powerful woman can be and how hard they do work. Feminist are very passionate about what they desire and the equal rights we have. I do not consider myself a Feminist, but i do feel strongly about our equal rights in this country.

2)After reading the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions, it was really disturbing how women literally were treated like nothing. The comment that stuck out to me was how it says "her master". This definitely shows how men of the 1800's thought of women and the little power they actually had. An issue that is still happening today is the fact that women are seen differently in the workforce. We have female lawyers and doctors but men still believe that they are stronger in that aspect. Something we need to focus more on today, is just really showing "equal rights" to both men and woman.

    3) Sojourner Truth's speech was very powerful and meaningful not only to African American Women but also White women. She explained how woman can survive and overcome anything, as can men. She goes into detail of the importance of equal rights and inspirtaional to all women.

~After the readings my feelings of feminism changed a little bit. I have always known that feminism has been a big part in our lives and that it took very strong and independent women to acheive what the ydid, but what i didnt realize how much of our world would change and be different. I never knew how limited women were and how far they have came in not only their personal lives but also in the work world.

~Within the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolution i saw a few issues that should be addressed and improved in the world now. The issue that stood out to me is where weeding vows saying "promise to obey". Marriage is suppose to be equal and for a woman to be told she is to "obey" her husband is wrong in my opinion, no woman should be talked down to and TOLD what to do. Another issue that i feel is still unfare is women in the workforce that are still treated like they aren't good enough to be doing what they are doing especially women that are in a high up position in business.

~Sojourner Truth is a different women's rights activist because she is not only talking to women in general but African American woman. She made women remember that they are not fighting against each other but for each other and the rights that they have today. Her speech also helped encourage the African American women to stand up and come together to fight for what they want.

    • My feelings for Feminism remain the same as they did before the readings. I do believe that my feelings would have been changed by the readings if it would have not been for previous history classes I have taken. I do believe that girls and boys are equal just in different ways. I do believe that women should have the same rights as men but I would not consider myself a feminist.
    • There are a lot of issues presents in the document but there were a lot that were left out. One thing I did not completely agree on was how the document was almost bias, leaving a women opinion out.
    • Sojourner Truth opinion varies from Senecca Falls document because she is a female African American. I love how she points out that the female gender should not fight against one another because of race instead they should join together to strengthen their fight.

    • My feelings on Feminism have slightly changed but more so just by having more of an understanding of what it really is and the history of it. I have always had a strong stance and belief women can accomplish what men can. For example, my mother is a women in what they call a “men’s” world by owning her own business and being a president of another. However, she tells me that there is more women constantly adding to the business and climbing the totem pole.
    • There is an obvious issue of subjects being unaddressed in the Declararion of Sentiments and Resolution due to the issues that are unclear and still continuing. Although this continues, women also allow it to happen as they sit back and are manipulated by the idea that men are above them in society when however, they are not at all.
    • Sojourner Truth has been faced with a different perspective as she is not only a woman, but also African American. The combination of the two made her battle that much harder. Her speech was mostly inspiring. She was able to prove them there is hope for black women in the suffrage movement and that they can’t stop fighting. The movement was not just for white women but also for African American’s fighting for their freedom.

My opinion of feminism did not change after the readings, I do believe that it is an important part of history and an important part of everything that women have had to go through. I do view it as an important part of history because without the suffrage movement women would still have many things in their way of equality with men.

I feel as if there are similar grievances in the two documents and that a lot of women's voices are not heard on the issues important to them. I also agree with Samantha on that our marriage vows we should not have "to obey" in them because it is about a partnership.

-My idea and opinion of feminism did not change after the readings, other than the fact of appreciating women's history more. I always thought feminism was an extremely important part of history and society, but I haven't necessairly took the time to think and truly appreciate it. Men always think they are better than women in one way or another. Ever since I was a kid, I never let this sterotype stop me. Women are just as achieving and powerful as men.

-These documents do portray women as being equal to men as much as they possible can. However, I do think they are somewhat prejudice to men. There are still situations in the world today where men feel they are above women. Even how men treat women on a daily basis. Yes, it's very nice, but hey, we're strong and powerful too. We don't need a man to do everything for us!

-Sojourner Truth gives quite a different perspective than the Seneca Falls document. Not only is she trying to empower women and bring them together, but also bring women of all races together. No matter the color or ethnicity, all women should be fighting in harmony for the same thing. I definitely think her speech helped women's rights activists in every way possible. It only advanced the movement, which is very important not just for women, but also people in general according to race issues.

My feelings are not changed after the reading, it just makes me feel stronger about it. In the world we live in women are rising in the business world and almost every aspect of life. This is a result of the effort of previous women along the way standing up for whats right.

The whole Declaration seems to have left our the Womens side of the rights. Yes, women are supposed to obey their husbands but in the world we live in today the women are just as likely to be the provider for their families as then men. Women need to be more respected in the work place and just life in general.

Sojourner Truth was an activist for womens right to vote. She wanted to get the point across to women that you should be proud of who you are and what you look like. When women do not get along it is hard to get anything to get accomplished, and when one throws in the race card that can destroy any progress. Once the women accepted each other, it made making progress easier.

  33. -In response to @hnbarnes.. I believe women still have several things standing in their way of equality with men. As far as being doctors, lawyers, etc., I think it's still quite stereotypical that a man's opinion is superior.

-In response to @keyriajmiles.. I completely agree with your opinion on feminism and how men will always feel they have the upper hand... for whatever reason.

*My views didn't change after the reading. I feel as if feminism is a way for women to be able to express themselves and show that we can do what any man can do. I think it is important because the feminists helped the women today. It's important for women to be able to express how we are just as important as men.
*I feel like the reading was kind of prejudice towards men and there were some issues that were left out. I think there should have been more of women's opinions and voice throughout the document.
*Sorjourner Truth was a very intelligent woman. She voiced her own opinion for women all around the world. She was not only a feminist, but also African American so she brought a whole new perspective. She contributed a lot to women's right.

After my readings, my views on feminism have still not changed. Although feminists stand for the equality of both men and women, situations of this equality tend to differ whether we want it to be this way or not. However, although I am not a feminist, I do believe that men and women should be allowed to share a lot of the same rights such as jobs, sports, etc.

I believe that there are numerous issues in the Declaration of Sentiment have room for adjustment. Some of the issues seem to prejudice towards women. A woman's two-sense should have been added to help balance the equality of the document.

Sojourner Truth was a woman activist that not only fought for equality, but for the equality of women's rights no matter what the race may be. She was very empowered and encourage women of the African American race to stand up not only as a race but for their equality in the movement of Women's Rights.

My view of feminisim didn't change after the readings. I believe that feminism is a way for women to express their drive and right to be considered equal to men. Even though I am the type of women that wouldn't mind sitting at home with the children while my husband was at work all day, I do believe that women should be entitled to the same rights as men. Because I believe it is morally right that both men and women be treated equally.

Sure there are some issues that are not specifically talked about in the Declaration of Sediments and Resolutions, but I do believe that women have faught and succeed with most of their rights to be considered equal to men. Women are working in the same offices as men and getting paid the same amount. I do think that politics is a very crutial place for women to have power. But people like Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin have definitely shown that us women will continue to fight for what we believe is right!

Sojourner Truth was not only a woman, but an African American woman. Being both that gender and that race made her so much more empowering. She showed everyone that it didn't matter what color you are but that all women should stick together to accomplish their dreams.

  37. @aecollum: I agree, the whole idea of feminism can be taken a little far, but as you stated, women should still stand for some things in relation to equality.

-My thoughts towards feminism did not change, how ever I have always thought of women to be just as strong if not stronger than men. I understand what they have to go throught which is I am glad it has changed through out history.

    - I think this document needs some more ellaboration, I believe there has to be more than what it was just said. Women and men are created equally therefore shoudl be treated equally.

-Sorjouner Truth's is a oustanding woman. I am sure she has touched women around the globe. She had to had it hard since not only she was a feminist but also a African American which during those times was alot tougher. My respects to this woman she had the courage that took to contribute no only to womens right but to race ethics as welll.

*My feelings about feminism have not changed after reading this. I have always felt strongly about the equality of men and women. We are just as smart and capable as men are. Although most men look down upon women and think they aren't capable of doing the same things that men do they are obviously incorect. Feminism is a way for women to express their true feelings and fight for what they believe is right.
*There are many things that are still unresolved in the U.S. society today as far as women rights go. We have made many strides over time and came a long way, but there is still those who believe that women are inferior to men. I agree with Samantha Adams when she says that "promising to obey" is like your being purchased. Maybe "obey" wasn't the right choice of word because marriage isn't about taking orders from your significant other.
*Sojourner Truth contributed in many ways to the gain of womens rights. She not only helped African American women but also white women as well. Strong women like her are the only reason we have gotten as far as we have. He situation differs from that of Seneca Falls and N.O.W. because she was a black woman, so not only did she have to fight for women but also for her race which made it more of a struggle and a bigger acomplishment.
