  1. -Give examples for how the use of the word N****r in songs, even by black singers, is a microagression. And, how the use of the word in songs only makes it seem more "okay" for everyone to say it.

  2. I like that idea alot. We could also think about the discrimination within the campus. Like Greek and Non-greeks. How people are so judgemental

  3. i like the one about the songs, i think its something that is always kind of shoved under the bus and never really discussed so i think we should do that one

    Racial Slurs in Society
After meeting with the members of our group and consulting with our section leader we decided to research and present the issues of racial slurs in society. A big issue that our group was mutually concerned with was the use of the “N” word in today's society. While this offensive word has always been used, it used to be largely frowned upon. The members of group one believe that the sensitivity of the word has been lost. You will hear this word on television, walking to class and in most rap and R & B songs. Our goal is to get awareness out there that the use of racial slurs such as the “N” word have taken over a large portion of the music industry. The artists and industries know how influential their brand is, and they use it to their advantage in most cases. But what they don't realize, is that they are setting a horrible example for young society. We want to challenge our classmates to question their own stance on the issue. Our project method is a free survey site called Survey Monkey. It lets you compose your own questions and answers. After the survey is made we will e-mail it to six people each. We want the results to be as diverse as possible. To make this effective, we will send the survey out to two Caucasian, two African American, and then two of any other ethnicity. We are hoping this will widen the playing field and make the results more interesting. Ally Collum with the help of Samantha Adams and myself (Meredith Anderson) composed the following questions that we saw fit to ask our surveyors:
    1. How many currents songs that you listen to have racial slanders?
    2. Are you offended by the use of these words?
    3. Which genre of music?
    4. Do you know anyone who is still an advocate for this?
    5. If you are of ethnicity, do the use of these words offend you?
    6. What age did you begin listening to this music?
    7. If Civil Rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. was still alive how do you think he would feel about this?

    8. Do you think this should be banned from music/radio/tv?
    9. Are you comfortable with using this language?
    10. How many of your friends are okay with using this language in everyday conversation?
After we gather the results from the survey, Keyria Miles will compile charts and statistics regarding what the people have said.
To add to the results we are anticipating from the survey, we will use material from the book and speakers we heard throughout the course. Samantha Adams and I (Meredith Anderson) are working on finding some useful and informational passages as well as other multi-media examples. One reading we will use is The Black Beauty Myth. We will also be pulling quotes and examples from Tim Wise's seminar “Between Barack and a Hard Place.” We will also be using examples from rap songs such as “Roll Call.” Prior to meeting with the members of our group and assigning everyone a job, we found out that two people had dropped the course. So needless to say we are still working on reassigning their jobs and getting them done, but our agreed schedule of completion is still Monday, April 18, 2011.
