  1. I think we should try and do it on homophobia and heterosexuality. I think we could ask several students and survey them maybe, and also ask what made them want to be a certain way. The only concern is I don't want to offend anyone, but I think we could do several great things with this topic!

  2. @MallorieGrissom: I agree with you, I was actually going to mention the same topic. I also think it would be interesting to do this project on transgendered people. The only issue I see with this is actually finding someone who is in fact transgendered.

  3. @Lauren R.-Yeah that would be a good idea too! I know that might be alittle difficult, but there has to be a way were we can talk to someone.

  4. @Mallorie Grissom-This would be a great topic to do our project on. It can cover a wide variety of information on this certain topic and we would also be able to get a lot of feedback from others.

    Group Media Project Proposal
In sections 003, group 4, Victoria Blackburn, Mallorie Grissom, Amanda Hardin, Alex Mays, Lauren Riley, and Megan Warren will be doing a presentation entitled "How Gay? The Truth of Homophobia." The date of our presentation is Wednesday, April 27.
In our presentation we will be discussing the different theories of homophobia. We will be basing this study mainly off college students on the Alabama campus as well as other campuses. In class this semester we have been taught the basic mind frame of homophobia and how this gives a distorted view of gays in our society. By using students opinions and what they think, this will show our fellow class mates how a more broad range of students feel instead of our class of mainly all girls. We will be exploring these theories by first comparing them to what students respond to the following questions: Are you homophobic? What influences your beliefs on homosexuality? (Ex: religion, school, parents) Do you support same sex marriage? Whats the first word that comes to mind when you see/hear the word "transsexual?" Do you know someone who is transsexual? Do you know the difference between transgender and transsexual? This will be done by stationing our group at the Ferguson Center on Monday, April 4th from eleven to three o'clock. We will have surveys printed out with these previous questions on them that are confidential but they will ask the students to put where on campus they reside. By asking the students where they reside we will be creating a visual that is a three-sided board that will have a map on the university campus and we will be putting color coded tacks on the campus based on the question: Are you homophobic? Having this visual, it will give our class mates a more wide spread view of our campuses beliefs.

  6. Also by doing these surveys we will grasp a better understanding of how educated our students are on these important topics and will be able to show how open or closed minded some students are to these touchy subjects.
Also in our project we will be showing how these students that take our surveys answer each of the questions and our group will also answer them and see how our views vary after what we have learned this senester so far. along with the survey information we will be taking pictures dressed in the different fashions that some people consider "gay." For example one slide may have a picture of a group member dressed in all boy clothes and see how our class mates respond to this type of clothing on a female. This information will be shown in our powerpoint presentation.
The information we will be using from our class will come from many places. The lecture "Homophobia and Queer Theory: Why Does It Matter?" will be a source for much of our groups information. Class discussions and all readings having to do with homophobia and queers will be worked into our presentation. By using this information and the information we gather on campus, we hope to contribute a new understanding of how our campus views these topics compared to what we have been taught and how we feel. This will contribute to our society on campus because those who take this survey will walk away wondering why such things as these matter and they will be thinking about these topics more than they would on a normal day.
I, Victoria Blackburn am doing the proposal for our group and will be working on the pictures for our slide show in our presentation. The survey questions and survey will be taken care of by: Victoria Blackburn, Mallorie Grisson, Amanda Hardin, Megan Warren, and Laura Riley. Our group as a whole will be handing out the surveys on April 4th at the Ferguson Center as well as meeting together to put our powerpoint together and plan our class presentation.
April 4th the surveys will be handed out and taken back up for our three-sided board. Later that week ou group will get together to read over the information and work on this information visual. The following week our group will meet again in the library to put our information together and get it and the pictures into our slide show and ready to present for class. We then will study our materials for our presentation on our own and get a better understanding and then present on Wednesday, April 27th.

  7. What a GREAT project proposal. You are taking a very unique approach. Try to think about how you can incorporate some video footage along with the survey information...maybe video some on-the-spot interviews with consenting participants in the main areas of campus you approach. Be sure to tie in the course texts. Just a thought, you may want to show some peers the Public Service Announcement shown in class with Wanda Sykes problematizing the daily use of "Gay" as an adjective and get their reactions. Have fun with this, and nicely done. Good luck!
