  1. I am fine with doing any of the topics we have discussed in class, but my idea is to do it on the subject of homosexuals/homophobia. I think it would be a good idea to take surveys around campus and get an idea of how student's at the university feel/care or how much they know about this issue.

  3. Anything goes for me!!! Homophobia and reproductive justice are both good topics but if I had to choose I would prefer homophobia, strictly because I think we would be able to find more participants. Reproductive is a good one too but it might be a little harder to find people to speak to or who are willing to speak about it. I'm sure we would have no problem finding people with opinions about it but we need people who have experienced it also. A good one to me would be power and privilage. It affected everyone in some way negative or positive, therefore; we know we will have alot of people to speak about the issue

  4. I like Katie Rissanen's idea about going around campus and surveying students on there subject. We could also ask people if homophobia/homosexuals have any effects in their actions toward someone, maybe even try to find the percentage of homosexuals to heterosexuals at our school.

  5. Project Proposal
As a group we decided that one pressing issue that needs to be addressed in our society is, The Beauty Myth. Having people stereotype women on their bodies based on what race or ethnicity they are something that is widely promenade in our country today. It is seen in magazines, billboards, and just in stores that we shop in. It shows women that this is the ideal body, and if you do not look like this and fit this description then something is wrong with you. So for our project we decided that we would change up the roles a little bit. Take a picture of a curvy Caucasian woman, and then a picture of a skinny African American woman and post them in public and see how people react and what they say about these pictures. Growing up with these pictures being the opposite of ideal, we feel like we would get different reactions from people because this is not the norm that our society teaches us.
“The Beauty Myth” by Naomi Wolf is the main text we will be using in the development of our project. We will also reference “The Black Beauty Myth” by Sirena Riley. Both of these readings examine how modern misconceptions of a woman’s beauty impact their lives. Wolf argues that the pressure to live by this beauty damages women in the western culture. These women feel pressure to look the best or be the best they can, but is it really about looking good for themselves? She also argues “the beauty myth is not about women at all. It is about men’s institutions and institutional power”. In Sirena Riley’s “The Black Beauty Myth”, she thinks that the media plays a big issue of unrealistic body images with all types of women. The week four power point we had in class on Combating Myths showed many magazine covers and advertisements which also influence women to feel like they have a certain expectation to live up to. Our project is mostly on how society has a certain view on the way white women and black women are expected to look, and who really sets the standards for this appearance. Is it men in our society? Or have the women of all ethnicities and backgrounds conformed to this expectation?

  6. For our project "Black and White" we have chosen to present our project to the class in video format. Our project will contain elements and documentation of the reactions of those in which we choose, and those who allow us to video them. To tackle this project we as a group have decided to divide our project into three parts which are: advertisement/billboard, documentation/interviews, and lastly education. The first element of our project will consist of creating a billboard depicting the most common stereotypes of both the black and white female bodies reversed. We will then display this billboard around campus, aiming to capture the reactions of those around us. With personal interviews and footage we are aiming to capture the reactions of those around of, whether negative or positive, in attempt to have them explain to us what they think is visually incorrect about our poster; thus, contributing to stereotypes. Upon documentation we will use the information gathered along with that we have read and learned in class, to educate individuals on "beauty myths" and how they along with stereotypes affect women negatively and distort society's views on body image as a whole.
The public’s personal views on outer appearances have been shaped by the images of the popular media. Flawless celebrities set the beauty standards for everyday people. The Beauty Myth is a controversial topic due to its unrealistic portrayed standards. It is understood that every human on planet Earth is different from one another, no one is or was created equal. Our group as a whole wants to contribute to the society’s understanding of the issues and problems that are caused by The Beauty Myth. We want our classmates and society to realize that no two people are the same, regardless of enhancements or surgeries. The Beauty Myth is a false imagination because message portrayed doesn’t express that many cultures value very different visions of beauty. Women of various races have a special body make up, unlike any others, which identifies each woman as individually beautiful. An idea we want to prove is that real girls are far more complex and beautiful than the kinds of girls and women they think are the male ideal- those in the media. We hope that society realizes the true meaning of being beautiful instead of judging a book by its cover.
When we discussed our project on Monday 28th we decided that not one person has an individual task. Instead we have decided that everyone must do one interview for the project, that way everyone has to at least speak during the project. We all thought that was a fair idea since this is a group project it everything should be as equal as possible. Next we thought it would be a good idea to print out a calendar of April to sign up for a good time and day that you can work on a proportion of the project. Once everyone has done their 1 interview they can work on whatever section they choose; we decided on this because projects typically are done better when done by someone who is interested or enjoys doing that task. We hope to everything a minimum of 4 days before our presentation so we can go over and discuss the project as a group. Another reason for this choice is so we can have a detail check of everything and fix any mistakes with a good amount of time so we are not rushed.

  7. This is a FANTASTIC project proposal! I have little to offer, as you have thought it through very intelligently and creatively. Make sure you nail down some key questions and keep them fairly consistent as you tackle your "experiment" in various sites and contexts. Nice work, and good luck!
