Planned Parenthood Funding Bill

Here is the direct link to the article on the Planned Parenthood funding bill that just went through the House of Representatives. Here are a few ideas to contemplate when reading this.

- If this is an issue about the right to preserve a life how can they justify taking resources away from people who use their services to plan families?

-If this is an issue about preserving lives how can they justify taking funding away from an organization that provides cancer screenings, HIV and STD screenings?

- Where do you draw the line at someone who has the right to receive an abortion. Do you only allow it to women whose health is at risk and victims of rape, incest, etc. , and how do you define rape and what level of threat constitutes a health risk?

- How does Roe. v. Wade come into play in this debate? Is it constitutional for them to take away funding from a program who provides access to a service that the federal government has deemed legal?

- Should they continue funding Planned Parenthood if they abandon their service of providing access to literature and resources pertaining to abortion? If so, does this undermine the Supreme Court decision in Roe v Wade?

There are a plethora of other things that can be debated and analyzed in this article. Please take the time to carefully read it and formulate your own opinion about this. This article will also help to put into context this weeks assigned readings. Please try and make connections about what the authors are saying about the politicization of female bodies and how it is being acted out in front of us today. I look forward to hearing your own insights in class Wednesday when we discuss reproductive justice.

  2. I think they screenings should be done but it should be done to both sexes. The decision of abortion should be done by the female, if the she becomes pregnant and female and male are in the same page then it should be a mutual decision.

  3. I believe that in some severe instances such as cancers of a mother, if the termination of the fetus is needed, then it should be funded. I mean, I think that the right to having an abortion should be equal to all women, although I do not necessarily think that it is right. I believe that every person should have a choice. However, I also believe that the father should have a say-so in the decision making process of an abortion.
